Fiberglass Pultrusion Profiles

Pultrusion involves pulling a collection of fibers in the form of roving, tow, mat or fabric through a resin bath and then through a heated die to cure the resin. This produces a continuous prismatic section which is similar to the pultrusion die. The process is used with a variety of resin and fiber types to produce products ranging from simple round bar to complex architectural mouldings. A flying cut-off saw is programmed to cut the product to the desired length. Since the predominant fiber direction is usually longitudinal this is reflected in the properties of the products which are usually strong and stiff in tension and bending with poor transverse properties. This limitation can be overcome by incorporating mats and fabrics with transverse reinforcement to provide a balance of properties.

Pultruded grating process

Pultrusion is a continuous molding process using fiber reinforcements with thermosetting resin matrices. Pre-selected reinforcement materials, such as fiberglass roving, mat, woven fabrics or stitched fabric, are through a resin bath in which all material is thoroughly impregnated with a liquid thermosetting resin. Typical resins included polyester, vinyl esters and phenolics.

The wet-out fiber is formed to the desired geometric shape and pulled into a heated steel die. Once inside the die. The resin cure is initiated by controlling precise elevated temperatures. The laminated solidifies in the exact cavity shape of the die. As it is continuously pulled by the pultrusion machine. Most any constant cross-section part can be pultruded. Pultrusion allows the designer to customize the selection of the resin system, the type and form of fiberglass reinforcements. And the placement of the reinforcements within the composite profile.

Assembly Procedures of Pultruded Grating

A>Grating components such as bearing bars and crossing bars shall be manufactured by the pultrusion, shall be of high strength and high stiffness elements having a maximum of 70% and minimum of 65% glass content(by weight) of continuous roving and continuous strand mat fiberglass reinforcements. The finished surface of the product shall be provided with a surfacing veil to provide a resin rich surface which improves corrosion resistance and resistance to ultraviolet degradation.

B>Grating bearing bars shall be joined into panels interlocked and epoxied into the proper spacing by passing a continuous, notched cross rod or cross rods through the web of each bearing bar. The notches shall be spaced on centers to match the distance between the load bars. A continuous keeper shall be driven behind the notched cross rod to affix it into place. Chemical bonding shall complete the assembly of the cross bar system to ensure both a mechanical and chemical lock.

C>Anti-slip surfacing: Grating shall be provided with a grit bonded to the surface of finishing grating product. Non-gritted surface is available upon request.

Pultruded Grating Characteristic

Although sharing most of the features of molded GRP grating, there are distinct differences which give pultruded grating a unique usage base. The most important feature of pultruded GRP grating consists of the fact that the glass to resin ratio is highter in the bearing bar direction. Therefore the span capacity of pultruded gratings is highter compared to that of the molded grating. This reflects in a reduction of support structures and lower costs.

Chemical resistance.

On the basis of the use of premium grade, orthophthalic, Isophthalic polyester or vinyl ester systems and a surface veil pultruded gratings offer superior corrosion resistance to variety of acids and caustics form the environment of light or moderately corrosive to extremely corrosive applications.

Light weight

At approximately a quarter of th weight of steel, pultruded gratings are much easier to handle, which reduces handling costs, allows for easier access and maintenace.

Higher stiffness

Pultruded grating possesses about 35% resin and 65% glass content(by weight), giving it the very high strenght to weight ratio. Load bearing bar capacity can be tailored to the application by modifying the glass content. Fiber orientation, and combination of mat and fiberglass roving reinforcement.

UV-protection

All pultruded gratings are added UV inhibitor into resin during process and a polyester surface veil is applied for optimum protectiong from the effects of weathering.
