-Agrochemical industry in China

Since early 1990s, the agrochemicals in China can basically meet the domestic demand. During the tenth five-year planning (2001~2005), the total number of agrochemical producers had reached 2, 600 in China.

The production structure of agrochemical also had changed. The percent of pesticide production in total agrochemicals had declined to 40% in 2005, and it is estimated this percent is about 38% in 2006. In the same period, the export of Chinese agrochemical increased continuously.

There are some characters existing in Chinese agrochemical industry, such as reasonable price, high quality, the export market gets more pluralism. There are also some problems, e. G. Technical barriers, "me-too" phenomenon, outdated facilities and so on.

-Production of glyphosate technical

There are two pathways of glyphosate production in China: IDA pathway and AEA pathway. By Nov. 2006, there are 32 active manufacturers of glyphosate technical in China, respectively located in 11 provinces. Among these provinces, Jiangsu owns the biggest capacity that is xxxxt/a.

The total capacity of glyphosate technical in 2005 and 2006 are xxxxt/a and xxxxt/a, with the year-on-year growth rate being xxx% and xxx%, respectively. While, the estimated capacity in 2007 will reach xxxxt/a which is 43.9 per cent higher than that in 2006.

Except for 2004, the capacity of glyphosate technical by AEA pathway was more than that by IDA pathway before 2006 although the latter has many advantages.

In the past six years, the CAGR of glyphosate technical was 20%, and to 2005, the output reached xxxxt. In addition, it is estimated that the output in 2006 will exceed xxxxt, reaching about xxxxt.

-Production of glyphosate formulation

Since 1990s, China has developed versatile formulations including the water solution (41% IPA, 45%IPA, 62%IPA, etc. ) and WP forms (28%, 30%, 50%, 58%, 65%, etc. ). Some of manufacturers purchase NPMIDA to produce formulation. Moreover, others also use chloroacetic acid to produce NPMIDA and then to produce glyphosate formulation.

Nearly all of the 10% SL glyphosate formulation is sold on domestic market. For these high content glyphosate formulations, about xx% are exported outside, others are consumed in domestic. Compared with finished product of 62% IPA, these semi-finished products of 62% IPA without auxiliary are well sold on international market.

The Chinese manufacturers add quite little auxiliary to the 10% SL or simply do not add auxiliary to it. T here are only a few producers use imported auxiliary, a large number of manufacturers purchase auxiliary from domestic producers.

-Raw material

The raw material of IDA pathway is DEA, and the AEA pathway usually starts from glycin. Yellow phosphorus and paraformaldehyde are public raw materials needed by both AEA pathway and IDA pathway. Iminodiacetonitrile and chloroacetic acid are also used as starting material which are firstly transferred into IDA and further into glyphosate. In IDA pathway, NPMIDA is an important intermediate product. Some manufactures even simply produce and sell NPMIDA.

Glyphosate industry is a comparatively small end user of yellow phosphorus...
